6.0       REPORT ON QUESTIONS/ISSUES RAISED AT LAST PAC MEETING

The Chair noted that to date, no response has been received from the FNIHB to the two letters sent regarding the position of this group as it relates to the PAC, TC and the SSS.  The PAC agreed that no further efforts will be made in this regard, but that of course, they are welcome to participate in the SSS discussions at any time.

In reference to the First Nations representatives on this committee, it was noted that the representative from Wahnapitae First Nations continues his liaison via e-mail.  Minutes, agendas, etc., are e-mailed to him and he responds appropriately.  As to a representative from the Whitefish Lake First Nations, formal enquiries have been made, but to date there has been no response.  The WG volunteered to attempt to contact this group with regard to their intention and to encourage representation. Minutes, agendas, etc., are e-mailed to their reserve to continue to keep them in the loop.

7.0       PRESENTATION

7.1       Update on the SSS

Ido Vettoretti of the WG provided the group with the following update:

Communication Activities:

·         Winter 2007 Update Newsletter was printed and circulated in newspapers the first week of March;

·         SARA Group provided an overview of the ERA the evening of March 5th prior to the IERP meetings;

·         The latest report from the IPO has been printed and mailed out this week; copies also sent by e-mail and posted on the website;

·         The SSS website has been updated regarding schedules and dates in the Q and A’s;

·         SARA is currently preparing the draft Plain Language Summary report on the HHRA – currently undergoing internal review;

·         Next step is to send the text to the CSC and TC simultaneously for review mid to late June;

·         Following that it will go to the PAC and David Pearson’s Science Communication class for readability review.  PAC will also received draft of the Executive Summary of the HHRA to compare with the PLS.  Proposed one to two week review by PAC.

At this point the question was asked as to whether the ERA will be going through the same process?  It was noted that the HHRA Executive Summary probably could not be completed until such time as the TC have completed their final 8 to 12 week review at which time the Plain Language Summary (PLS) can then be completed. Further to this, the PAC provided several suggestions regarding the public comment period. The WG indicated they would be taking all this information into consideration and appreciated the foresightedness of the PAC regarding the distribution of these documents.  The PAC also requested that several promo pieces be issued every couple of weeks just to keep the public in the loop.

            Volume III (ERA) IERP Review:

·         The following members participated on the panel: Dr. Charlie Pittinger, Dr. Sam Luoma; Dr. Jo Gorsuch; Dr. Shaun Watmough; and Dr. Joyce Tsuji;

·         The IERP made the following comment via a press release following the sessions:

§   The SSS ERA represents the current stat of science in ecological risk assessment; and

§   The panel complimented the SARA Group for preparing a comprehensive terrestrial ERA.

·         The IERP report on the ERA is expected by the end of May.

ERA Technical Session:

·         A technical session to discuss MOE and IERP comments will be held in June;

·         Pending discussions, the ERA should be finalized in September, 2007;

·         Tentative date for ERA release the week of October 22, 2007.

Volume II (HHRA):

·         SARA reviewed comments from the IERP on the HHRA; as a result samples of soil and dust for additional bioaccessibility analysis were re-submitted;

·         There have been various technical sessions to address the scientific issues related to the HHRA;

·         Preliminary results have been presented to the TC by the SARA Group;

·         The HHRA report will be submitted to the TC in June wherein the TC will have an 8 to 12 week review period;

·         Following that, there will be a period for public review and comment.
