In December, 2004, the Public Advisory Committee recommended that the SARA Group conduct a telephone poll to determine knowledge and interest about the Sudbury Soils Study.
· 606 residences were contacted
· 32% know about the Sudbury Soils Study
· 83% correctly identified statements describing the study
· 24% say there is nothing that would encourage them to participate in the study
· Only 1% have visited the study website (http://www.sudburysoilsstudy.com)
· 48% have heard about the study in the Sudbury Star
· 33% have heard about the study on the television news
The Communications Sub-committee for the Sudbury Soils Study recommended a more localized, grass-roots approach to communicating about the study, and more television coverage.
Other recommendations include:
· Personal contact with local interest groups and key community leaders
· Increase television news coverage
· Utilize Public Service Announcements and community television networks (like Channel 10) for study news updates
· Develop information for students (high school, college and university)
· Presentations to Lions Clubs, Chamber of Commerce, politicians
· Presentations at Public Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings to educate the public
· Inco’s President’s Breakfast (focus on environment)
· Canadian Institute for Mining Conference
· Op-ed pieces in local papers monthly
· Restoration workshop Laurentian University February, 2005
